Over the years, I’ve heard that you should just quit your job if your boss is a bully and quite unreasonable. That is not possible for most people. Jobs do come with benefits that can’t be easily dismissed. So, the question becomes, what do you do?
Sometimes you need to keep your job and the paycheck and benefits that come with it. What can you do? Minimize your exposure. Be clear and concise in your interactions. Use as few words as possible with as little embellishment as possible. If you are asked for a report with 5 items, don’t give him or her 12. Just give the 5 items. I’ll say it again, minimize your exposure as best as you can.
Many companies have Employee Assistance Programs (EAP). Take advantage of the counseling that is available. Years ago I had a co-worker who was losing sleep at night and on the verge of anxiety attacks. When I suggested EAP, he was upset because he didn’t have a problem. His boss did. I explained that the boss wasn’t losing sleep and he was. After just a few visits, he was happier and healthier than before! Reach out for assistance before you really do go crazy!
